6 Ways Creative Writing Can Improve Your Marketing

September 9, 2026

While marketing and writing no doubt go hand in hand, the link between creative writing and marketing may seem a tad less obvious. Having recently entered the industry, I’ve found that many of the skills I developed during my creative writing degree have proved incredibly useful in marketing. These are the 6 ways it has helped me, and can help you too.

Finding your own unique voice in writing can only be done through painstaking practice. In marketing we change our tone of voice based on the client’s brand, so developing a personal style of writing may not seem helpful. However, understanding your strengths as a writer will help you tailor yourself to what brands you have the most to offer. It can also help you accurately plan how long you may need to spend familiarising yourself with a new client’s tone of voice.

Reading over others’ work is a great chance to get your proofreading brain into gear. It’s not just about grammar and punctuation, although that is still important, but engaging with material to understand where a piece might fall short. Is it primed for the wrong audience? Is it confusing in its messaging? Can its structure be improved? All of this is prime practice for something you will do every day in a marketing job. It also prepares you to be able to communicate and take on board that feedback in a constructive atmosphere.

Think about your favourite adverts and pieces of marketing. The best ones tell a story. From TV adverts to social media reels, to a well-written email. A good piece of marketing needs to make the audience feel part of a world that you’re selling. Knowing the structure and beats of a story inside and out can help you craft something engaging, even scaled down to a tagline.

As creatives, we are evolving constantly, and sometimes that improvement can be an incredibly quick process. We’ve all re-read an embarrassing text message or had an old social post ambush us on our timeline and cringed. That’s often how it can feel going back to a first draft when you’ve changed your approach as a writer. It’s helpful to put a project down and leave it as long as possible before doing the edit. This allows you to give your own work something of a ‘fresh eyes’ check. The important thing is not to look back at a piece of work and be upset that it is not immediately perfect.

Writing should paint a picture and evoke emotion from the reader. Knowing how to use words to inspire feelings or actions from the intended audience is a skill. Creative writing helps you add purpose and flair to your tone of voice that will feel fresh and authentic and can help add impact to your visuals. It also helps you adapt your tone of voice to the specific audience you’re trying to appeal to, an essential tool to have on your marketing toolbelt.

Storytelling and creative writing can come in a variety of forms. Thinking about how best to tell a story can lead you down an avenue of learning. Poetry can teach you brevity. Scripts can show you the transition of words to a visual medium. Interactive fiction can teach you coding basics. Skills that can help improve your social media plans, photography briefs, and web design. Thinking about how to best engage an audience opens up potential for fresh ideas and new skills that can improve your marketing style.

Good marketing convinces. Good writing connects. Know how to do both, and you have a winning strategy.
